Suite Ideal for Expecting Mothers Who Want a Minimal Intervention Delivery

North Charleston, SC – Warm. Soothing. Relaxed. As Trident Medical Center staff toured the hospital’s new holistic birthing and postpartum suites Labor and Delivery nurses talked about the difference the new suites would make to families. Offered as an alternative to expecting mothers who want a minimal intervention in-hospital delivery, the suites provides women comforts they’d find in a five-star hotel such as a four-poster queen-size bed, and aroma therapy. The suites were inspired by conversations women had with Trident Health System Director of Women’s and Children’s Services Director Deona Bien, RN.

"The opening of the suites is the culmination of nearly two years of listening, planning, and finally remodeling the rooms,” explained Bien. “What impressed my team and me about the conversations with women is that many of them felt like this was their department as much as it is ours. Many had multiple births at Trident Medical Center. We learned that our hospital is an important place for them in the telling of their family stories."

In addition to four-poster queen size beds, and aroma therapy, women who choose the holistic birthing suite also have access to:

  • Whirlpool tub
  • Birth ball
  • Mood lighting

The new holistic birthing and postpartum suites are the first in-hospital suites of its kind in the tri-county region. It’s a new addition to Trident’s Women’s and Children’s Services Department. “Giving birth is a natural process and the suites are a new alternative to women who choose to deliver at Trident who want to bridge home delivery with the hospital suites they are more familiar with,” stated Bien.

She added, “One of the many benefits of the new suites is that it is located in the hospital. The expectant mother and her baby have quick access to all the care every other mother has in our Labor and Delivery Unit,” said Bien. She adds women who want to consider their delivery in the holistic birthing suite need to talk to their physician first to see if it’s appropriate for their and their baby’s needs and to schedule the suite if their physician approves.
