Summerville Medical Center Expansion
SMC Plans $26 million addition
Summerville Medical Center began as a “bedless” facility in 1989, one of the first of its kind in the country, offering outpatient services such as rehabilitation, urgent care and diagnostic imaging. Since that time, the facility has grown into a full-service community hospital offering a broad range of specialties.
Twenty-two years later, Summerville Medical Center is meeting the needs of the community with a new expansion. The project will lay the foundation for future development of services as the community continues to grow. Plans include a three-story patient tower that will be connected to the existing hospital on each level. Mindful consideration is being used in the design and planning in order to prevent disruption to patients who are hospitalized during construction.
Summerville Medical Center will be adding the following services with the 30 bed expansion:
- Addition of eight-bed critical care step down unit
- 18 semi-private rooms will become private rooms
- Addition of 22 med-surg beds
- Expansion of labor and delivery rooms
“The expansion will allow us to address the capacity constraints that we expect to see in the future as the health care needs of Summerville and Dorchester County continue to increase.”
-Louis Caputo, CEO of Summerville Medical Center
