Our goals are to enhance quality of life for patients with a diagnosis of cancer, while supporting the patient and family during their entire experience.  We aim to meet the physical and emotional needs of cancer patients and their support group through a multidisciplinary approach with the goal of returning the patient to a fulfilling and productive lives. We have included information about our various services and encourage you to call our Cancer Center if you or someone you know needs cancer treatment.

Radiation Oncology

Patients requiring radiation therapy can be assured the most up-to-date technology and compassionate care within the Trident Cancer Center. Radiation Oncology services include the treatment of most malignancies. The radiation oncologist evaluates and directs the patient's overall treatment course.

RapidArc™ Radiotherapy Technology

Trident Health is proud to provide our RapidArc radition therapy program. RapidArc treats tumors with pinpoint accuracy five time faster than traditional treatment plans. Learn more about RapidArc radiotherapy.

Medical Oncology

A medical Oncologist often becomes involved during the initial evaluation of a cancer patient. Diagnostic tests are frequently required to define the extent of the cancer. Once the extent, or stage, is known, the oncologist helps determine a treatment plan best suited to the needs of the patient.

Cancer Committee

The Cancer Committee is comprised of a group of physicians, nurses, administrators, chaplains, social workers and tumor registrars. Each brings their own expertise to this multitalented group. This group initiates, promotes and monitors all cancer related activities at Trident Health System.

Tumor Registry

The Tumor Registry at Trident Medical Center supports the activities of the Cancer Committee and Cancer program. The Registry's functions include the collection management, quality assurance and analysis of data from persons diagnosed with cancer who receive all or part of their care here at the facility. The Tumor Registry is also instrumental in ensuring compliance with all standards of the American College of Surgeons, as Trident Medical Center maintains accreditation by that body. The Tumor Registry is critical to the success of any cancer program, and Trident Medical Center both supports this function and relies heavily on the expertise within this department.

Our Cancer data is reported to the South Carolina Central Cancer Registry quarterly and National Cancer Data Base yearly. The professional staff of the cancer registry remains active in their professional organizations, the National Cancer Registrar Association and South Carolina Cancer Registrar Association.

Tumor Board

Tumor Board is held in order to present and discuss the newly diagnosed cancer cases for the week. One of the managing physicians gives a brief overview of the circumstances of the diagnosis. The pathologist shows digital photographs of the pathology and educates the group about the particular pathologic features. The radiologist reviews all the pertinent x-rays and makes suggestions as to what other imaging studies may be beneficial. Once the specifics of the case are known, the group discusses the various treatment options for the patient. The goal is to reach a consensus as to how to best manage the patient's care. As always, all physicians are welcomed and encouraged to present their cancer patients to the Tumor Board. Over the years, this has been an excellent forum for the exchange of ideas and the promotion of multi-disciplinary care.

Support from Others

Cancer affects patients and families in many different ways. Trident Cancer Center offers a variety of groups and services for individuals and families. Because the relationship between spirituality and wellness is increasingly documented in clinical studies, the hospital chaplains offer individualized emotional and spiritual support to patients and their family members. Additionally, a support group meets each week in the Resource Room on the oncology floor. The group is facilitated by a chaplain, social worker and oncology nurse. Patients, family members and friends are welcomed and encouraged to attend.

We also offer music therapy to our cancer patients. Music Therapy is an established healthcare profession and complementary treatment modality. Music Therapists utilize music and the patient/therapist relationship to promote healing and enhance quality of life. When combined with other medical treatments, it can help patients cope mentally and physically with their illness. Learn more about music therapy at Trident Health.

Robotic Surgery

Referred to by many as robotic surgery for prostate cancer or robotic prostatectomy, da Vinci® Prostatectomy is more accurately a robot-assisted, minimally invasive surgery that is quickly becoming the preferred treatment for removal of the prostate following early diagnosis of prostate cancer.
