Pedestrian Safety

Pedestrian injuries are the second leading cause of death in the United States for children ages 5-14 years old.

Safety Tips

  • Children under age 10 should never cross the street alone.
  • Always look and listen for cars and trucks.
  • Always wear bright, light, or white colors to be seen.
  • Always carry a flashlight or reflectors at dusk or night.
  • Always stop at the curb or corner before crossing.
  • Never cross in the middle of the street.
  • Always walk on the sidewalk or walk facing traffic as far off the side of the road as possible.
  • Always use traffic signals and crosswalks when available.
  • Always make sure cars come to a complete stop before crossing.
    • Make eye contact and wait for acknowledgment.
    • Wave at the driver and wait for them to respond before crossing.
  • Always walk – don’t run – across the street.
  • Always cross at least 10 feet in front of a school bus, never cross behind the bus.
  • Always ask for an adult’s help when a toy or pet goes out into the street.
  • Never play in driveways, streets, parking lots or unfenced yards by the street.
