Boogie for Breast Cancer Awareness event celebrates survivors

Charleston, SC –Trident Medical Center will host its inaugural Boogie for Breast Cancer Awareness event Saturday, October 8 from 10 am –noon in the parking lot of the hospital’s Medical Arts Building, 9313 Medical Plaza Drive, Charleston, SC 29406.

“Wear pink and come ready to move to the groove,” said Sandy Ariale, Trident Breast Center manager. “We’ll celebrate survivors and be inspired by the memories of those who courageously fought the fight.”

Radiologist Brian Mahon, MD., who is the hospital’s representative in this year’s American Cancer Society’s Real Men Wear Pink fundraiser said one of the key messages for the event is the importance of regular mammograms. “Most women should have an annual screening mammogram starting at age 40. If you’re high-risk with a significant family history of breast cancer you may need to start earlier and you should talk with your primary care physician about the appropriate age to start.” Dr. Mahon is a key member of the Trident Breast Center team.

Dr. Thomas Litton, with Tri-County Surgical Associates, has performed life saving breast cancer surgery for more than 30 years. “Early detection of breast cancer is the key to survival. That’s one reason regular mammograms are so important.” According to the American Cancer Society, the five-year survival rate of breast cancer is 90%, which means that women who have breast cancer are, on average, about 90% as likely as women who don’t have breast cancer to live for at least five years after being diagnosed.

For breast cancer survivor and director of development for the American Cancer Society South Carolina Sundi Herring, “Community events are a fun and important way to spread the word that mammograms save lives.”

To make scheduling screening mammograms easier Trident Health recently launched online scheduling for its three breast centers –Trident Breast Center, Summerville Breast Center and Moncks Corner Medical Center. Appointments can be made online at Schedule Mammogram.

Boogie for Breast Cancer Awareness will include music, drawings, survivor stories, refreshments and the North Charleston Fire Department pink firetruck will be onsite for the first hour.
