Summerville Medical Center began as one of the Lowcountry's first freestanding Emergency Rooms in 1989 and became a full service hospital in 1993. Since then, the facility has been the only full service community hospital serving the greater Dorchester area offering a broad range of specialties.

Twenty-eight years later, Summerville Medical Center is meeting the needs of this thriving community with a new expansion. The project will consolidate obstetric and neonatal services to the Summerville Medical Center campus and lay the foundation for future development of services as the community continues to grow. Our facility currently has a robust maternity unit and added an onsite maternal fetal medicine clinic to care for mothers at risk for high-risk pregnancy last summer.

The expansion project will include:

  • A two-story patient tower adding 30 new patient beds, increasing our capacity from 94 - 124
  • Beautiful new birthing suites, providing mothers and families a welcoming space to bond with their baby
  • Additional well baby and Level II nursery beds where specially trained nurses provide quality care to our tiniest patients
