Summerville Medical Center Announces $24 Million Emergency Room Expansion Project
Expanding ER Care for our Growing Lowcountry Community
Charleston, SC (April 5, 2019) – Summerville Medical Center is excited to announce a $24 million Emergency Room expansion designed to meet the Lowcountry community’s growing need for access to ER services. This expansion is part of a $100 million investment Summerville Medical Center is making into our community to ensure they receive excellent care close to home.
The multiphase expansion launches April 10, 2019 and is scheduled to be completed August 2020. The project will also expand Lab, Pharmacy and Dietary Services at the hospital. The hospital’s ER and dedicated pediatric ER will be open and continuing to provide 24/7 access to care throughout the project.
“Throughout the expansion our ER will remain open and providing the same level of exceptional care with short wait times to ensure our community is cared for quickly,” said Lisa Valentine, CEO at Summerville Medical Center.
For the safety of patients and visitors, traffic and parking will be rerouted throughout the project. Starting April 10, patients and visitors will access the ER through a temporary entrance on the east side of the building parallel to Burton Avenue. Outpatient services, registration & financial services, and all visitors will enter through the Main Entrance. Signage will be installed to direct patients and visitors on where to park and how to access the new entrances. The hospital is offering free valet service to ensure the smoothest process for patients and visitors.
Summerville Medical Center has one of the busiest ERs in the Lowcountry as well as one of the busiest dedicated pediatric ERs in South Carolina. In 2018, more than 70,000 adults and children received emergency care at Summerville Medical Center.
“We are thrilled to expand our ER to meet the needs of our growing community,” commented Preston Wendell, MD and Trident Health Emergency Room Medical Director. “Each day our ER team provides outstanding care to our community. Expanding our ER and pediatric ER will give us the opportunity to care for more patients, grow our pediatric ER program, and increase the number of private rooms available. We are dedicated to ensuring that our patients continue to receive the highest quality of care they need to recover and return to their daily life.”
This project will expand and renovate the Emergency Room, Lab, Pharmacy and Dietary units. Project improvements include:
- Increase ER patient capacity to 43
- Addition of 13,000+ square feet for new building construction
- Expansion of the existing Lab and Pharmacy
- Expansion of the existing Dietary and Cafeteria
- Renovation of Outpatient Registration
- Expanded and remodeled ER entryway
