Trident Health’s breast care program provides women in the Charleston, SC region with the most advanced technology available, backed by a compassionate team of professionals who understand women’s concerns about breast health. In addition to our mammography services, we also offer cancer risk assessment and genetic testing for patients who are considered at high risk for breast and other cancers. When you schedule a screening mammogram, you will be asked if you want to participate in a short questionnaire. Through the short questionnaire, individuals at a higher risk for cancer can be identified and receive recommendations for further testing based on their risk factors.

Why breast imaging is important

When it comes to beating breast cancer, early detection is vital. Routine screening with a yearly mammogram starting at 40 years old increases the chance of survival. When breast cancer is caught early, women have more treatment options and better outcomes.

  • Women 40 years old and older should have a mammogram and clinical breast exam every year.
  • Women between 20 and 40 years old should have a clinical breast exam every three years.
  • Women in their 20s should conduct monthly breast self-exams.

Our Trident Health system facilities all offer 3D mammograms, which combine multiple breast X-rays to create a three-dimensional picture of the breast. This type of mammography can reduce the need for additional imaging services and can find tumors that regular mammograms cannot.

Genetic testing for cancer risk

Some people have inherited a gene mutation, giving them a higher risk of developing cancer. Many people choose genetic testing to help them make better decisions about their healthcare.

If you have any of the following risk factors, you should consider genetic risk assessment and testing for the cancer genes:

  • You or a close family member were diagnosed with ovarian cancer, male breast cancer or pancreatic cancer
  • You are of Ashkenazi Jewish descent
  • Multiple family members with certain cancers
  • Diagnosis at a young age of certain cancers

You should discuss the process and all possible results with a doctor, nurse practitioner or genetic counselor to better understand all of the factors associated with genetic testing.

Individuals who carry mutations in certain genes are at a higher risk of developing different types of cancers. But cancer doesn’t have to be inevitable. Trident Health’s breast centers offer cancer risk assessment and genetic testing, which can detect these mutations early. This can help you calculate your individual risk of developing cancer. Testing aids those with a strong family history of cancer in determining whether their risk is high enough to consider additional interventions.

Before proceeding, anyone considering genetic testing should discuss the process with a doctor, nurse practitioner, genetic counselor, or healthcare provider. Genetic testing raises several questions that need to be addressed individually, such as:

  • Would I want to know if I am at a higher risk for developing a potentially life-threatening disease?
