Treating cancer (oncology) may involve surgery and radiation therapy, as well as chemotherapy, which may be delivered through infusion treatments. Learn more about these different approaches and the excellent professionals who make up the Trident Health Cancer Care team.
Radiation oncology is the treatment of disease using high-energy imaging methods to either kill cancer cells or keep them from growing and dividing. Trident Cancer Center is home to Radiation Oncology Associates of Charleston, which includes a highly experienced team of radiation oncologists:
Dr. MacDowell has served as a radiation oncologist with Trident Health since 1993 and has played an important role in the development of Trident Cancer Center over the past two decades. While she treats many kinds of cancer with radiation therapy, Dr. MacDowell’s specialties include targeting breast cancer. She received her doctorate of medicine from the Medical University of South Carolina and served as chief resident for MUSC’s Department of Radiation Oncology during her residency. She is board-certified in radiation oncology.
Dr. Collins became a radiation oncologist in 1995 and has cared for patients at Trident Cancer Center since 2000. His sub-specialty is treating prostate cancer, which often includes the use of low-dose radiation implants. Dr. Collins also serves as co-chairman of Trident Health’s Cancer Conference, a weekly meeting of medical professionals to discuss ongoing cancer cases. He received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and performed his residency there, serving as chief resident in MUSC’s Department of Radiation Oncology. He is board-certified in radiation oncology.
Dr. Williams is a board-certified radiation oncologist who specializes in treating cancers of the head, neck and lungs. He completed medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina and continued there as a radiation oncology resident. He eventually served for more than a decade as an assistant professor at MUSC, where he also conducted clinical research. Dr. Williams joined Radiation Oncology Associates and the team at Trident Cancer Center in early 2012.
The radiation therapy team also includes:
- Radiation therapists, who administer radiation treatments as directed by the radiologist
- Dosimetrists, who calculate radiation doses to destroy tumors while sparing normal tissue
- Medical physicists, who work with and oversee the dosimetrists and make sure equipment is working properly
Medical oncology is the diagnosis and treatment of cancer using chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, biological therapy and targeted therapy.
A medical oncologist often becomes involved during the initial evaluation of a cancer patient. The medical oncologist uses diagnostic imaging and laboratory tests to define the type and extent (stage) of the cancer. Then the medical oncologist determines a treatment plan best suited to the patient’s needs.
