North Charleston, SC  Trident Medical Center Electrophysiologist Frank Cuoco, MD, is one of the researchers in a new study published August 27, 2023 in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Dr. Cuoco and other researchers in the US determined a new approach to treating one of the most common forms of heart disease, Atrial Fibrillation, commonly known as AFib. Pulsed field ablation is transformative technology that is effective and minimizes the risk of serious complications compared to conventional treatment.

Dr. Cuoco said more than 600 patients participated in the research nationwide, and Trident Medical Center was a top enrolling institution in the trial.

The results were presented recently at the international European Society of Cardiology symposium. The article, published today in the New England Journal of Medicine, is titled Pulsed Field or Converted Thermal Ablation for Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation.

Pulsed Field Ablation uses micro-second scale high voltage electrical fields to return the heart beat to its normal rhythm while minimizing risk of damage to nearby structures, such as nerves and the esophagus.

Dr. Cuoco says more than five million Americans have been diagnosed with AFIB and many of them would benefit from this new ablation therapy. Dr. Cuoco is affiliated with Charleston Heart Specialists.

For the second consecutive year, Healthgrades has named Trident Health's Trident Medical Center and Summerville Medical Center recipients of its Americas 250 Best Hospitals Award.
