Ladson, S.C. Live Oak Mental Health & Wellness, Trident Medical Center’s new freestanding mental health hospital, will open a 15-bed adolescent unit Sunday, August 6. Live Oak, which opened in June 2023 is the first mental health hospital in the South Carolina Lowcountry in more than 30 years. It provides inpatient and outpatient services to adults (in a 45-bed unit) and adolescents (ages 12-17).

Live Oak Mental Health & Wellness adolescent psychiatrist Ryan Byrne, MD said, “What we’re doing with the opening of the new adolescent unit is providing a new resource for families in crisis who need intensive treatment.”

Dr. Byrne adds at least 20% of adolescents will suffer from some mood disorder such as anxiety, ADHD, and depression. “Adolescents are facing more stressors than ever before. Social media is a significant stressor.

But, there is hope.

The good news is we have a lot of options for treating mental health issues in our adolescents. It’s important to remember the earlier treatment begins the better the prognosis.”

Care in Live Oak’s 15-bed adolescent unit is provided by psychiatrists, clinicians and other caregivers who’ve received special training in providing mental health care to adolescents. Care is provided for diagnoses that include:

Inpatient care diagnoses

  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Depressive Disorders
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Suicidal ideation

Outpatient care diagnoses

  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Depressive Disorders
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Schizophrenia

Live Oak’s Intensive Outpatient Programs for adolescents are scheduled so students can continue in school.

“Parents know their children best,” said Dr. Byrne. “Significant departures from their child’s typical behavior, like isolating themselves when they are usually outgoing, may indicate their child may be having a mental health concern.”
