Charleston, SC  – Trident Health announced today that the HCA Healthcare Foundation has awarded a $25,000 grant to support Trident United Way’s FoodShare program as part of its Health Equity Catalyst Grant Program. The funding is through the HCA Healthcare Foundation’s Healthier Tomorrow Fund, a community impact fund focused on addressing high priority community needs and health equity.

Jeff Wilson, President of Trident Health and Chief Executive Officer of Trident Medical Center, said, “The work that Trident United Way does is critical to the personal health of thousands of residents in the Charleston, SC region.  Healthy people make healthy communities.  We’re honored to support Trident United Way’s FoodShare program as they continue their life-enriching and hope-restoring work.”

FoodShare Berkeley County, powered by Trident United Way, seeks to bring fresh fruits and vegetables to the Berkeley County, SC community to improve financial stability in homes and change individuals’ lives through healthy eating.

DJ Hampton, President and CEO of Trident United Way, added, “This generous grant from the HCA Healthcare Foundation is a vital step toward creating a healthier, more resilient community. The FoodShare program is at the heart of our goal to alleviate food insecurity, and we are grateful for HCA Healthcare’s commitment to improving the lives of those we serve.  With their support, we can continue to ensure that our neighbors have access to nutritious food, which is foundational to both individual health and community well-being.”

Launched in August 2023, the Health Equity Catalyst Grant provides a one-time operating grant to support organizations and collaboratives addressing health inequities in a defined focus area in order to advance or accelerate efforts to:

  • Provide culturally and structurally competent services,
  • Advance high-impact health equity programming,
  • Support collaborative health equity efforts, and/or
  • Address root causes of health inequities.

This year, the grants were given to nonprofits addressing food insecurity and providing access to healthy foods across the country.

The Healthier Tomorrow Fund at the HCA Healthcare Foundation is one example of the many ways HCA Healthcare is making a positive impact in the communities it serves. In 2024, HCA Healthcare provided charity care, uninsured discounts and other uncompensated care at an estimated cost of $4.4 billion. Additionally, HCA Healthcare contributed more than $50 million to community organizations in 2024.
