Residency program purpose
The Trident Medical Center (TMC) post-graduate year one (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency Program builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of a clinical pharmacist responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification and eligible for post-graduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
Residency program mission
The Trident Medical Center PGY1 pharmacy residency is a 12-month training program that provides in-depth, comprehensive learning opportunities to develop pharmacy residents into well-rounded, clinically savvy, acute care pharmacy providers.

Pharmacy services provided for our inpatients include:
- Anticoagulation dosing consult services
- Centralized 24/7 inpatient pharmacy services
- Decentralized pharmacy services Monday through Friday
- Emergency department
- Infusion center/oncology
- Inpatient rehabilitation unit
- Medical/surgical units
- Perioperative services
- Pharmacist-directed medication dose adjustment protocol
- Pharmacy medication reconciliation team
- Vancomycin and aminoglycoside dosing consult services
Intensive care unit (ICU) - 38 beds
We have a multispecialty ICU that serves patients with a wide range of conditions. Features include:
- Mixed medical/surgical/cardiovascular (28 beds)
- Neurosurgical/trauma (10 beds)
- Pharmacy critical care services
Salary
The salary includes funding for expenses related to resident participation in required activities, such as the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Mid-Year Meeting and the Southeastern Residency Conference.
Salary: $47,495

PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency
Our program provides residents with core learning experiences, including:
- Orientation
- Hospital and centralized pharmacy training
- ALS/BLS training
- Internal medicine l and ll
- Interdisciplinary rounding
- Student precepting
- Transitions of care
- Inpatient medication reconciliation

- Complete and work on department projects

- Floor-based cardiology services and procedures observations
- Infectious diseases/antimicrobial Stewardship
- Interdisciplinary rounding
- Antimicrobial Management program projects
- Pediatrics
- Floor-based pediatric care for variety of age groups
- Leadership, wellness and resilience (year-long longitudinal)
- Focused training and support; discussion of readings on leadership, emotional intelligence, and professional skill development
- Heart failure prevention clinic and inpatient warfarin (year-long longitudinal)
- Provide clinical services in clinic one-half day per week
- Review non-ICU inpatient warfarin patients for dose adjustments each weekday during assigned months

- Centralized pharmacy staffing every 3rd weekend; 8 – 12 hours

- Option to complete the Academician Preparation Program (APP) through a partnership with Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)
- Opportunities to precept P4 pharmacy students during APPE Acute Medicine rotations

About our hospitals
Trident Medical Center is a 321-bed acute care hospital. Key services include Level II Trauma and adult emergency, cardiovascular, orthopedics, oncology and robotic surgery. The Trident Breast Care Center also provides services for women and men navigating through breast cancer treatment.
Summerville Medical Center is a 124-bed acute care hospital. Key services include adult and pediatric emergency room (ER), women’s and children’s services, colorectal surgery, orthopedics and spine. The hospital recently announced a $66 million expansion that will increase its licensed beds by 40 percent.
With the opening of Live Oak Mental Health and Wellness, families in the region now have access to the first mental health hospital to open in the state’s Lowcountry in more than 30 years. Adolescents aged 12 years and older, adults and geriatric patients receive inpatient and outpatient care in the 60-bed hospital that opened in June 2023. Among its many features are large outdoor healing areas.
