Inpatient mental health services
Experienced professionals are ready to provide support through our adult mental health programs. At our 45-bed unit, we provide inpatient care in a safe, comfortable and therapeutic setting. Psychiatrists, nurses, and support specialists monitor and oversee your care 24 hours a day to help increase your mental capabilities as far as you can manage.
Your psychiatric care team thoroughly diagnoses and assesses your condition. Then, we create a treatment plan specifically for your needs. Your care may use any single method or a combination of techniques, including:
- Cognitive therapy
- Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
- Family counseling
- Group therapy
- Individualized counseling
- Pet therapy
- Relaxation techniques
Specialized outpatient mental health programs
At our outpatient programs, group therapy is our primary form of treatment. We also offer one-to-one therapy and family education to support you in transitioning from inpatient care. Then, we create a custom treatment plan that may include:
- Anger management
- Cognitive therapy
- Communication skills development
- Coping skills education
- Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
- Goal setting training

Adult partial hospitalization program (PHP)
Throughout this program, you'll receive intensive, structured treatment. Psychiatric specialists improve your level of functioning and help reduce symptoms to prevent a relapse or hospital admission.
You'll attend weekly therapy sessions from Monday through Friday for three to four hours per day allowing you to return home each evening. These weekly sessions can last between two to four weeks. However, your care team will determine the length of your treatment.
Your care team will create a therapy plan that considers your strengths, limitations and health goals. They will monitor your progress and makes treatment updates to help you achieve a positive outcome.
Adult intensive outpatient program (IOP)
We offer an intensive outpatient program that accommodates your work schedule yet is more than a once-a-week therapy session. You'll need a physician referral or be transitioning from inpatient care to attend our challenging group therapy program. You'll attend therapy three to five days per week for three to four hours. Depending on your condition, your care plan will last two to four weeks.
To qualify for our IOP, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be 18 years old or older
- Be medically stable to participate in the program
- Be willing and able to participate in cognitive-based therapy
- Do not require custodial care
- Have psychiatric symptoms that impairs social, occupational or other important functioning
- Present no immediate risk of harm to self or others
Substance abuse and recovery care
Therapists understand that overcoming an addiction requires support beyond discontinuing substance abuse. Our skilled, understanding specialists take a multidisciplinary approach to addiction treatment and customize your care. We focus on helping you recover from and manage your addiction, providing coping tools and support resources.
Live Oak Mental Health Therapy Center - Charleston
Our newest facility serves residents of the Charleston peninsula and offers many of the services available at our main hospital. We offer intensive outpatient group therapy three days a week, on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm.
Aftercare and ongoing mental health support
Your mental wellness team works with you and your family to prepare for your transition home. We educate your family and caregivers to help them understand your illness and enable them to provide support for your ongoing recovery. Our team also provides resources and continuing aftercare, if needed so that you can reach your mental health goals.
